Iron Maiden Complete Songography

     In honor of the forthcoming En Vivo! live album, here's your Iron Maiden research done for you. From b-sides, to one-offs, to hidden tracks, to non-album singles, Iron Maiden has undoubtedly one of the best collections of non-album tracks of any band out there, ever. As a rabid Maiden fan, I have spent a lot of time and money trying to aquire everything they've done, and here it is. Unfortunately, aside from the actual album tracks from their 15 studio albums (which are readily available just about anywhere, and I highly reccommend you picking them up), nearly all of it is out of print. Many of these tracks were featured on several different releases. For instance, I've got a 12" Japanese single of Aces High that has Cross Eyed Mary (originally released as the b-side of The Trooper from Piece Of Mind) as one of several b-sides, though no description of any edition of the Aces High single I've been able to find mentions it. All of the b-sides off of singles from their first album up through Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son were re-released in 1990 in The First Ten Years series (its only 20+ years out of print and its a large set, a complete one will set you back quite a bit on auction sites), and again, this time up through Fear Of The Dark, on the 2-disc Castle Records re-issues in 1995 (also all out of print). A good number of them popped up on The Best Of The B-Sides discs from the Eddie's Archive box-set in 2002 (also out of print). There have been no releases compiling b-sides of any single after Out Of The Silent Planet from Brave New World, and all of the individual singles are, you guessed it, out of print.

     But have no fear, I've no doubt that they'll come up with another clever way to re-release this stuff again without coming across as money hungry. I have to give it to them, everytime things have gotten re-released, they have managed to give you something for your money; it wasn't just a remastered or a remixed recording, it was always a whole package.

     Everything is listed more or less in order of recording or release with the general exception of the lead single from each album which was normally released a week or two before the album itself. Those b-sides are listed following their related album tracks simply to preserve each album's original release track list (the original releases of Iron Maiden, Killers, and The Number Of The Beast all had a slightly different track listing than that which is currently available).

     There are a couple of tracks that I debated on before including. One is the roughly 4 minute "Special Radio Edit" of Rime Of The Ancient Mariner; it is a one-sided acetate from EMI - South Africa, and only a few copies are known to exist, and as it wasn't actually "released," it's up for discussion as to its inclusion here. The other is the Steve Harris Interview from the digital single of Different World; the physical track itself was never made available, it was offered only as streaming audio to those who had pre-ordered the digital version of the single, so the only physical versions (cd, mp3, or otherwise) that may exist are from individuals who managed to record the stream when they heard it.

     Every track listed is a distinct and separate recording or mix (worth noting, as many tracks have been released multiple times). Only studio tracks are listed. As their live recordings actually outnumber their studio output, I may put together a live songography as well. I suppose that you could claim that the 3 Radio One Legends Sessions tracks are live recordings, but they are live in the studio so I included them.

     I have not included the promotional interview discs that are floating around out there (one from the Piece Of Mind era, one from Brave New World, one from Dance Of Death,...). Even though they are promo only items, I still do consider them official releases, but as there was no new and/or exclusive music incuded on any of them I simply didn't think they fit here. The couple of interview tracks that are here were released in mass as official b-sides on actual singles and that's the only reason that they've been included.

The Misfits Complete Songography

      The Misfits original catalog is, to put it simply, an amalgamated convoluded cluster of remixes, overdubs, re-recordings and re-releases. There are only 3 true rarities in the entire bunch, and only one of those is an actual Misfits song. The real rarity is the version of Last Caress that appeared only on the Beware Ep; that track coupled with Glenn Danzig's 1981 solo release of Who Killed Marilyn? b/w Spook City, U.S.A. (two tracks which have never been released in that form since the initial 7” single) make up the hard to find stuff. I have included those two Glenn Danzig songs in this list because they are so often and so closely associated with the Misfits. Everything else is fairly readily available on the following releases: Box Set, Misfits [Collection I], Collection II, Legacy Of Brutality, Static Age, Earth A.D. and Walk Among Us. Many tracks and/or versions of tracks are repeated across these releases, but each one does have a number of cuts that are exclusive to it. The versions of the two Collection albums that were included in the Box Set have slightly different track listings than their stand alone counterparts, as well as featuring either edited or completely different mixes of several tracks. I've tried to notate throughout which mixes come from where and what releases they may have been remixed for later, as well as which tracks have been overdubbed or edited.
      I generally would not include an unreleased record in one of these lists, but have included the scrapped 12 Hits From Hell here. The album made it as far as being reviewed by critics before all of the distribution copies were “destroyed,” and as such, there are more copies floating around out there than there might generally be for a cancelled release. And the tracks that make up that record have been through the ringer a number of times and in several different incarnations, on several different releases.
      The tracks are listed, more or less, in order of recording date, mixing date, overdub or re-recording date, and release date. The source release listed is, for the most part, the tracks initial release of that particular incarnation of said track. For example, although 7 songs make up the Beware Ep, I've only listed one as coming from it because all of the other tracks that made up that Ep had been previously released on the Horror Business and Bullet 7”'s. Even with all of the repetition, no wholly unique track has been listed more than once.

      There are a few demos circulating out there, which I have not included, like the Misfits 1981 version of Archangel, originally written and recorded for Dave Vanian of The Damned to use in a solo project that never got off the ground, that was eventually recorded and released by Samhain.

      The legacy they've left is amazing when you consider that they only released 55 different songs in their entire career, which amounts to less than 2 hours of music [repeat appearances bump that number up to 128 tracks counting the solo 7"]. Have fun finding them.

  

      And now for the “new” Misfits. I'm gonna place all of the post-Danzig Misfits material in a separate list for all of you that have an issue with them. They really are a separate entity and in a way I think they should be treated as such. Personally, I like them. A lot. Well, I did... right up until Jerry Only decided to sing. I'm no Jerry Only hater, and I commend him, no matter what others say, for trying to keep the legacy alive, no matter what you may think his motives are. I thought Project 1950 was a thoroughly enjoyable record. You could tell that he had a real passion for the material he was singing, and that passion more than made up for his less than stellar vocal abilities. And then came Devil's Rain. The music's not bad, though, for me, it was sub-par by Misfits standards. But the vocals... Jesus Christ! I believed that (while he was singing it) Glenn Danzig actually wanted to hack the heads off little girls and put them on his wall. I believed that there were 52 ways to murder anyone, and that 1 and 2 were the same, and that they would both work as well when Michale Graves sang it. I even bought the fact that Donna was sorely missed when Jerry sang about her. There's not a word that comes across on Devil's Rain that I even cared to attempt to suspend my disbelief for. One of the things I love about the Misfits is the intensity of the vocal delivery, and this last record just ruined it for me. That said, I've seen them three times with Graves, and twice with Jerry singing, and [EDIT: now once with Glenn singing], live, Jerry does a decent job, as long as you keep in mind both pairs of boots he's trying to fill.
      Enough soapboxing. There are only a few rarities in this list as well: The two tracks off of Psycho In The Wax Museum (if you didn't get a copy by mailing in your stickers from the first 2 Misfits Records releases, then ebay is about all you can hope for, and copies do pop up there every so often), the Misfits / Balzac split single and the Graves vocal version of N.Y. Ranger.
      Pick this stuff up and enjoy.
