In honor of the Fugazi Live Archive going online this month, I figured a full Fugazi song list would be a good place to start this. Listening through it, I realized that to fully appreciate it you have to go back a bit farther. So it’s been expanded. Now, in honor of my recent surprise email exchange with Ian MacKaye about a roll of pictures I took at a Fugazi show in 1991, here is every song I was able to locate on which he is a credited performer. I left off several full albums on which he is noted in general as providing background vocals (G.I. and Scream come to mind) as well as his involvement solely as producer.
If you can take the 10 and a half hours to listen to this in one sitting (pretty good length for a good road trip) there’s what feels like a very natural progression to it all. I’ve never particularly liked The Teen Idles material, but then again, I was working backwards. I’d discovered Minor Threat first, and going from Minor Threat to The Teen Idles can be a bit painful, but hearing Minor Threat born out of the Teen Idles is a very different experience. Minor Threat has the distinction of being one of a handful of early '80's hardcore groups that doesn’t sound dated, even today. No diatribes on Reaganomics here. 30 years on the music still holds up, I think, due to the subject matter. They wrote about stuff that affected kids their own age, and not just the kids from their neighborhood or their social circle. There has always been something very universal to me about Minor Threat’s music, and even at 37 it still speaks to me. You don’t have to like it, but you can’t really deny that this is shit we all faced. If you think you can, chances are you've read this far by accident. The Skewbald session fits in nicely. The Embrace album is one that I truly liked from first listen, and still listen to regularly, but am always left wanting more, not more material, more out of the album itself. They just never seemed, to me, to mesh as a group; there was a lot of potential with those guys that I don’t think was ever fully realized. I mean come on, this is essentially Minor Threat's frontman singing for The Faith. Who wouldn't have astronomical expectations for that? It's far from bad, I love the record, I just think it could have been somthing more that it was. That said, we come to the Egg Hunt 7”. It’s by far my favorite release of his career. It’s just damn good music. “We All Fall Down” was a song written for Embrace which they passed on as a band, but hearing it performed by Ian and Jeff Nelson, who, when they're on, mesh inexplicably well, is simply fantastic; it's what I feel like the Embrace album should have been. The Pailhead material I absolutely love, and upon hearing it I immediately wanted more, but looking back I’m glad it was as short lived as it was. Had they gone on and released anything else it would have cheapened the experience. Jorgensen should have followed suit with Ministry and Revco as far as I’m concerned, if he had I may still love them too. As for Fugazi, you either love them or you could do without them. I don’t think I’ve ever come across someone who just “kinda likes” Fugazi. I discovered them in ’89 when the Margin Walker Ep came out. I'd never heard anything like it. I’ve not really heard anything like it since. It was like grown up punk music. Now, grown up is a relative term; I was 16 years old when I took the photo above while they were touring for the Repeater album. I remember listening intently as Ian stopped the show mid-"Suggestion" and had a very polite conversation with a guy in the audience who accused him of having grown up himself, all because Ian didn't want this fella's boot impaled in a teenage girl's face. I was initially a little disappointed in Steady Diet Of Nothing, though in hindsight that’s only because Repeater is just so damn good. Steady Diet is a solid album. Red Medicine is the only one I’m not a huge fan of and have never really been able to pinpoint why, and Instrument is not an easy continuous listen, but it’s really a different animal altogether. I like The Evens records a lot. If you haven’t heard them, they’re quite different from all of his other efforts, but hearing them in context like this you can so see where they've come from. I’m not sold on Amy Farina’s vocals yet, but they’re growing on me and I dug her work with The Warmers. Lally’s discs are good too, but again very different. I look forward to adding to this list in the future. I hope there’s another Fugazi record in there somewhere, but what I really want Ian, if you were wondering, is the other two tracks from the Egg Hunt session to come out.
If I’ve missed something, leave a comment and I’ll add it to the list.
Enjoy.
Enjoy.
